Module Evaluation

This project has been an interesting one for me. At the start of the year, children’s books was something that I could see myself creating but as I have progressed through this module, I have definitely come across some hurdles and found that my style is not necessarily suited to children’s illustrations.

My end product is not what I had envisioned at the beginning of the module and with more planning and experiments, I think I may have reached an end result that I was more proud of. Especially the front cover, my idea for the front cover was just something that for some reason that I could not get down on paper. This is something that I am disappointed with as with a book, the cover sells it, its the first thing a buyer sees and I don't believe my for cover to be a good reflection of my work within the book.

However, with all this being said, I am happy with the story I created I would like to go back to this with a fresh and new set of illustrations to accompany it.

Final Product

I choose to get my book self published with inky little fingers and I am extremely happy with the finish. I think that book looks professional and I would be happy to send this off to publishers.

Presentation Evaluation

Presentations are not something that I exceed in as I struggle with selling my work with confidence. The feedback I received was very useful with my next steps regarding getting my book published. The idea of having my booked published was something that I never intended on doing and so I wasn’t aware of what I could do next with it.

With illustration it was something that I didn't see as a future career and so the idea of carrying it on didn't interest me as such but as my lecturers had bought up, that would limit me. With the idea of getting it published how could I know it wouldn't work if I never thought of trying it.

One of the things the lecturers brought up is maybe to go into collaboration with someone, someone else’s illustrations could have worked a lot better with my story that I had written. Maybe one thing from this module that I have noticed is that I can write a better story than produce the illustrations for one.

Publishers

An idea that was put forward was to send my book off to dental practices or even hospitals. I could put the idea forward of having my book in waiting room so to give children something to occupy them. Dental practices and hospital are relatively busy places and so this could be a perfect opportunity to get a wide range of people to view my book with the hindsight of being able to grow with my illustrations.

Bloomsbury are a publisher that I have looked at. They cover a wide range of genres and age groups and so I think that my work would be suited for somewhere like Bloomsbury.
Little Tiger Press  and Beehive Illustration are another two publishers I have looked at. they both represent a large variety of illustrators and both are somewhere I can see my work being advertised and published

Story

Haven’t You Heard About the Dentist?

Script

This is George and he has woken up with the most horrendous toothache.
After telling his mum, she tells him they can go to the dentist and they will make it all better.
George has never been to the dentist but he his happy to know that they can make the toothache go away.
At school he meets his friends Ben, Lucy and Tim. He tells him about his toothache and that he is going to the dentist.
“But haven't you heard about the dentist?” They all say
“I hear the dentist is a monster who pulls out your teeth to put in his own goofy smile” says Lucy
“Well I hear its a demon woman with red eyes and sharp black claws who can extend her arms to get you” says Tim
“Thats nothing, I hear the dentist is a giant with a snakes tongue and big red eyes” says Ben
After hearing this, George is scared of the dentist.
Once getting there, he sits in the waiting room with his mum.
He hears the door open and a shadowy figure at the door. He cant help but hide his face.
But to his surprise, its just a normal woman standing there.
“George would you like to come in” says the dentist.
George explains where the toothache is coming from and the dentist sorts his teeth out without any pain.
The next day George goes to tell his friends about his experience.
“You are all wrong, the dentist was lovely! Look I even got a sticker!” “Now I have strong white teeth again” said George.

“Well the thing is” says his friends….

“None of us have actually been!”

Blurb

George has woken up with a terrible toothache. His mum tells him they can go to the dentist to sort it out. But when he tells his friends at school they are all shocked because well haven't you heard about the dentist?

Font

With it being a children's book I wanted something that was simple and easy to read as children books are predominantly used to help children read. I think that the font used also helps with the style of my work, simple, clean lines, nothing too fancy or overpowering on the page.

Final Flat Plans

I simplified the characters and surroundings right down and I am happy with the final result
